You can't cook in the snow!

Sm_mod04

What wild weather we are having!  I took a peek outside the window this morning to find inches of snow covering the ground!  It also proved to be a great (but very, very cold) photo opportunity for my new apron.  Staying in my black and white mood, this apron is off-white with a patterned black appliqué of a swirly cupcake and royal cupcake crown! I’m not sure what drove me to put a crown on it, but I did, and I think it’s pretty cute!  The edges are sewn with rickrack, giving a faux scallop edge. The cupcake base is also a pocket, so I can stash my timer, towel, and recipe in it!

Winged Cupcake Apron

Adsc_0515_copy

“Winged Cupcake” is my new design, soon to be seen on almost anything and everything I make, I’m sure.  I was doodling around with some apron ideas the other day, planning my "Tie One On"for February, when I came up with this little idea.  I am going to try to take some better pictures soon, when we finally have a warmer day.  You can’t see the other side, but there is a long pocket with a printed material.

I also tried ‘hand appliqué’ for the first time with this. Wow, what a pain. I have to call my quilt friend to see if she can show me a couple hand sewing techniques, I really need some practice on this!

Chicken Apron Love

Adsc_0495sm

We are far from being snowed in, less than 2 inches on the ground, but it was fun to stay inside bundled up with a fine book (‘The Namesake’), warm tea (Mango black), and a bread baking book (La Brea).  The morning was spent flipping page after page of the closing chapter of a book I have been meaning to read for some time, and before I knew it I was finished at it was noon.  My dough starter had sit out overnight, the smell of yeast overflowing in the kitchen.  Recipe in hand I got to work on a rustic boule, working in intervals of kneading and rising. It was also a nice chance to wear my new apron, which I call ‘the chicken apron’.  I love the pattern on the fabric, the folk art chickens in black and white on the whimsical yellow background.  I instantly knew it was going to be an apron, and standing in the fabric store I also knew it had to have a scallop hem.  It was the first fabric in a long time that I actually knew what is was going to be before I had it cut! In hindsight it could also use a pocket of some sort, next time!
