Ah yes yes yes, the dress! You have seen the play by play pictures (1,2,3,4,5,6)I have been taking while working on it, and now you can finally see the whole thing! During fittings and hemmings I tried it on, but nothing was like looking in the mirror for the first time, on my wedding day, wearing this dress. It took everything I had not to cry, standing in my white dress in the bathroom with little girls peeking in the doorway to catch a glimpse. I would have taken a few deep breaths if I could, however the bodice was keeping me from doing so. I hadn’t eaten anything all day, so the dress fit a little loose for the ceremony. Fine by me!
The dress was a lot of work, and I have special people to thank for working on it (and taking these photographs!). I’m very happy with the colors I chose, an off white for the dress and a sheer flowered material for the godet (a fabric panel inserted to make the skirt flare) and bodice. The night before the wedding I decided that I wanted a veil, and thankfully we bought more sheer material than was needed, so a veil it was! It was double layered with delicate scallops at the bottom (I am a huge fan of the scallop edge!), attached to a barrette.
By the end of the day, the dress still looked fresh and surprisingly clean. I made the huge mistake of wearing strappy heels under the dress, which was fine the first few minutes of picture taking, on the cement or hard floor, but the second I stepped onto the lawn, I was sinking with every step! After a few hours, at the cake cutting, I proudly went barefoot! Nobody can see under that dress, so wear whatever is comfortable! Now the day is over, and I still have the dress in an old dress bag, waiting to be cleaned and stored in a dress box, and hopefully one day someone else will be able to wear the dress. Hopefully I’ll have crafty children who can take it apart and make it into something more updated for them, like “Pretty in Pink”! Hah! (I used dress pattern Vogue 2824)
